Aboriginal Day

22 Jun

On Monday, June 21st the New Brigden students and staff celebrated National Aboriginal Day. National Aboriginal Day is held on June 21st to honor and celebrate Canada’s First Nation, Inuit and Metis people, and also recognize the important contributions they have made to the country. Why June 21st? Well, on that day, for centuries, many of the first inhabitants would celebrate the arrival of the warm weather and pleasures of the summer solstice. The summer solstice is the day of the year with the longest light. It is a day with spiritual significance when many Aboriginal groups celebrate their culture and heritage.
Our students & staff at New Brigden participated in a number of activities. We watched some short video clips about our First Nation people, enjoyed fried bannock, played games, roasted hotdogs and made friendship bracelets. It proved to be a fun day for everyone.
